Eden Horticulture Clay Pebbles for Plants, 10L

Eden Horticulture clay pebbles for plants are round 10–20mm balls of fired, expanded clay: light, pH neutral and reusable, in a handy 10 litre bag for anyone who wants happier roots in pots, troughs and simple water-based growing.

Picture a row of herb pots on the kitchen windowsill, each with a little layer of terracotta-coloured pebbles in the base and a few scattered on top. Water drains freely, the compost never sits soggy, and the pots look neat and cared for.

Clay pebbles for plants that keep roots breathing

Each pebble is baked at high temperature until it puffs up inside, leaving a honeycomb of tiny air pockets. That porous structure holds a little water while letting air reach the roots, which is exactly what most plants want and exactly what heavy, wet compost can’t give them.

Because they’re inert, the pebbles add nothing and take nothing away. There’s no feed in them, no pH swing and nothing to break down, so a bag bought this spring can be rinsed and used again for years of sowing, potting and repotting.

What clay pebbles help with

  • A drainage layer in the base of pots and window boxes
  • Top dressing houseplants to slow evaporation and look tidy
  • Semi-hydro houseplants, orchids and aroids
  • Simple hydroponic and water-culture projects with children
  • Mixing into compost or coco to open up heavy mixes

Little pebbles, healthier roots

  • Air and water in balance. Porous pebbles hold moisture inside and leave air gaps between, so roots don’t drown.
  • pH neutral and inert. They won’t change your compost, feed or water, so there are no surprises.
  • Reusable for years. Rinse away old roots, let them dry and they’re ready for the next pot.
  • Graded 10–20mm. A useful size for drainage layers, net pots and top dressing alike.
  • From the Eden range. Made for Eden Horticulture, the UK specialists behind the brand.

Clay pebbles: your questions answered

Do clay pebbles help drainage in pots?
Yes. A 2–5cm layer in the base of a pot keeps the lowest roots out of standing water, and pebbles mixed through compost open it up so excess water drains more freely.

Do I need to rinse clay pebbles before use?
Yes, give them a good rinse first to wash away clay dust from manufacturing and transport. A sieve or colander in the garden works well.

Can you grow plants in just clay pebbles?
Yes. The pebbles hold the plant up and keep roots airy, and the plant takes its food from a feed added to the water. This is how semi-hydro houseplants and simple hydroponic set-ups work.

Are clay pebbles reusable?
Yes. Remove old roots, rinse them well and let them dry. Because they’re fired clay, they don’t rot or break down.
