The Mars Hydro VG40 is a twin-pack grow light for seedlings: two 60cm full spectrum LED bars, 20 watts each, that give trays of seedlings, herbs and salad leaves strong, even light on a shelf or windowsill.
February is when the seed packets come out, but the light at the window is still thin and grey. Slide a VG40 bar above your seed trays and the tomato and chilli seedlings grow short, sturdy and deep green instead of tall, pale and leaning.
A seed starting grow light for strong, sturdy seedlings
Raising your own plants from seed is one of the loveliest bits of growing: tiny loops of green pushing up through the compost, then the first true leaves. Good light at this stage makes all the difference to how they grow on in the garden or on the balcony.
It’s a gentle way to bring the seasons into home education, too. Sow in February, pot on in April, and plant out in May, with a nature journal along the way.

How long should seedlings be under grow lights?
Around 14 to 16 hours a day suits most seedlings, with a dark night to rest. A plug-in timer keeps it regular.
