Plagron Perlite is a 100% natural volcanic perlite for plants: feather-light white granules, graded 0–6mm and sold in a 10 litre bag, that you mix into compost to give seedlings, cuttings and houseplants airy, free-draining roots.

It’s the little white flecks you see in good potting mixes. Run a handful through a bucket of compost with the children, fill a tray of cells, and the mix feels instantly lighter, crumbly and inviting for young roots.

Perlite for plants that keeps compost light and airy

Perlite is volcanic rock that’s been heated until it pops, a bit like popcorn. The result is a sterile, germ-free granule full of air, which stops compost compacting into a dense, soggy lump and lets water drain away while roots still find the moisture they need.

It never rots or breaks down and has virtually no nutrients or salts of its own (EC 0.0–0.1 mS/cm), so it simply improves the structure of whatever you mix it with. Plagron’s perlite carries the RHP quality mark for clean, consistent growing media.

What perlite helps with

  • Lighter, free-draining seed and cutting mixes
  • Houseplants that hate wet roots, such as succulents and tropicals
  • Opening up heavy compost in pots and window boxes
  • Rooting cuttings in a perlite and compost blend
  • Improving drainage for herbs grown indoors

Lighter compost, happier roots

  • 100% natural volcanic perlite. Nothing added, just expanded volcanic rock.
  • Germ-free and consistent. A clean, RHP-certified material you can trust in seed trays.
  • Stops compaction. Keeps compost open and crumbly, even after months of watering.
  • A little goes a long way. Mix 10–35% into your compost, depending on how airy you want it.
  • Feather-light. Easy for small hands to scoop and mix.

Perlite: your questions answered

How much perlite should I add to compost?
Plagron recommends mixing 10–35% perlite into your soil. Use the lower end for vegetables and the higher end for seedlings, cuttings, succulents and houseplants that like sharp drainage.

Is perlite good for cuttings?
Yes. A mix of perlite and compost holds moisture while staying airy, which helps cuttings form new roots without rotting.

What’s the difference between perlite and vermiculite?
Perlite mainly adds air and drainage, while vermiculite holds more water. For most pots and seed mixes that tend to stay wet, perlite is the better choice.

Can you grow plants in perlite alone?
Yes. Plagron describes perlite as a substrate in its own right for hydroponic growing, with all feed supplied in the water.
