The lids are off, the air is warm and still, and a little fan clipped to the top shelf sends a soft ripple across the leaves. The seedlings sway, the compost dries just enough between waterings, and the whole corner feels fresh.

A small clip on fan for seedlings, herbs and houseplants

Moving air is one of nature’s quiet gifts to plants. A light breeze makes seedlings stand up sturdier, helps damp compost dry out on top, and stops the stale, humid pockets that mould loves. Outdoors the wind does this for free; indoors, this little fan does it for pennies.

It’s a lovely, simple lesson for children too. Grow two trays of cress, one with a breeze and one without, and compare the stems after a week.
