How far should a plant light be from the leaves?

Slim grow light bar above a terracotta pot plant showing correct hanging distance

A plant light should sit above your plants with a clear air gap, not resting on the leaves. Distance matters because brightness falls off quickly as you raise the light. Too far away and stems go leggy. Too close and leaves can bleach or crisp. In a UK kitchen or living room you fine-tune by eye: start with the maker’s guidance, then watch new growth for a week.

Which? stresses keeping lights close enough for strong growth and not crowding too many plants under one lamp. Dobbies likewise says place lights above the plants without letting them touch the leaves.

Simple starting rules

  1. Read the distance notes for your specific light or stand.
  2. Hang or shelf-mount the light directly above the canopy.
  3. Leave a gap so leaves cannot touch the bars when they move or grow.
  4. After several days, adjust height before you panic-buy a brighter light.

Home rule of thumb for many slim LED bars over herbs and seedlings: start roughly a hand-span to a couple of hand-spans above the tops, then adjust. Exact centimetres vary by model and wattage, so treat this as a feeler gauge, not a law.

Signs the light is too far

  • Stems stretching with big gaps between leaves
  • Seedlings leaning and flopping
  • New leaves small and pale
  • Growth pointing hard toward a window instead of staying under the bar

Fix: lower the light a little, or add hours on the timer, or both. See how many hours plant lights should be on.

Signs the light is too close (or too strong)

  • Bleached or washed-out patches on the uppermost leaves
  • Crispy tips nearest the LEDs
  • Stunted, tight growth right under the centre of the bar

Fix: raise the light, shorten the day length slightly, or move sensitive plants toward the edge of the shelf where light is gentler.

Why adjustable shelves help

Lit plant stands with movable tiers make distance easy. Lower a shelf when you sow; raise it as seedlings shoot up. The Indoor Garden Centre examples:

Compare in Plant stand with lights: which shelf?.

Coverage: do not expect one bar to light a whole room

The brightest zone is directly under the light. Plants pushed to the far corners of a wide shelf get less. Do not overload a single bar with a forest of pots. Match shelf width to the light you own, or choose a stand whose bars are sized for those shelves.

Seedlings, herbs and houseplants need slightly different gaps

Seedlings do best with the light relatively close so they stay short and green. Check daily in the first week; they can catch up to the bars quickly. Raise the shelf or fixture as soon as the top leaves approach the LEDs.

Microgreens and trays are similar: even light from above matters more than raw power. Keep trays centred under the bars rather than stacked at the dim edges.

Herbs and compact houseplants can sit a little further away once they are established, especially under stronger multi-bar shelves. If a fern or calathea looks bleached on top, raise that shelf first rather than watering more.

Fruiting pots on wider stands (chillies, strawberries) need both enough intensity and enough headroom. Use the tallest gap on the stand and keep plants directly under the bars.

One-week tuning checklist

Day 1: set height from the product guidance and start your timer. Day 3: look for stretch or lean; lower slightly if needed. Day 7: look for bleaching on the uppermost leaves; raise slightly if needed. Ongoing: re-check after every big growth spurt or after you pot plants into taller containers.

FAQ

Can LED plant lights burn leaves?

They run cooler than old hot lamps, but leaves can still bleach or dry if held too close for too long. Keep a gap and watch the top leaves.

Should the light be closer for seedlings than for houseplants?

Often yes. Seedlings are usually kept nearer the light so they stay short and sturdy. Raise the fixture as they grow. Larger houseplants may sit a little further away, especially under stronger bars.

What if my stand height is fixed?

Use pot risers (an upturned saucer) to lift short plants, or hang a separate bar on adjustable cables above a bookcase shelf.

Do I measure from soil or from the top leaf?

From the top of the leaves (the canopy). Re-measure as plants grow.

White lights or purple for correct distance?

Use white full-spectrum in living spaces. Distance rules are about intensity and hours, not purple colour.

Soft product pick

If you are tired of propping lamps at awkward heights, an adjustable lit stand such as the Mars Hydro small plant stand keeps the gap right as plants grow.
