A plant stand with lights is a freestanding shelf unit with plant lights built into the tiers. For UK kitchens and living rooms it is often the tidiest way to grow herbs, houseplants, microgreens or spring seedlings without covering every windowsill. Choose by what you want to grow, how much floor space you have, and how much light the shelves need. All the stands below use white full-spectrum LEDs and a single UK plug.
If you are still deciding whether you need lights at all, start with our indoor plant lighting guide.

What to compare before you buy
Floor footprint. Measure the gap beside the fridge, the end of a worktop, or the living-room alcove. Slim stands around 40 × 30 cm fit places a bookcase will not.
How many lit shelves. Most home stands have three lit growing shelves plus an unlit top or base shelf for pots, a watering can or surplus trays.
Total watts (at the wall). More watts usually means stronger light across a wider shelf. Rough home guide: around 54W suits compact herb and seedling stands; around 100 to 150W suits wider salad and houseplant shelves; 250W suits a tall multi-shelf vegetable setup. Watts are not a beauty contest. Match them to shelf width and what you grow.
Adjustable height. Seedlings and microgreens need the light close; taller pots need more headroom. Adjustable tiers save frustration.
Mess control. Waterproof mats, a single plug and optional covers matter in real kitchens. Lockable wheels help when you want to clean behind the unit.
Look. White full-spectrum light reads as ordinary daylight. That is what you want in a room you eat and sit in.
Slim kitchen herb garden
Spider Farmer Slim Indoor Herb Garden Plant Stand, 54W
- Size: about 40 × 30 × 120 cm
- Four tiers, three lit shelves
- Six LED bars, 54W total, white full-spectrum
- Tool-free frame; wheels or feet; optional zip cover
- Best for: basil, mint, parsley, chives, pea shoots, a few seed trays
This is the “gap beside the fridge” option. Up to a few seed trays can sit on each lit shelf. One plug runs every light.
Compact all-rounder for home growers
Mars Hydro Small Plant Stand with Grow Lights, 4 Tier, 54W
- Size: about 40 × 30 × 120 cm
- Four adjustable tiers; three lit shelves
- Six × 9W bars (54W), 180° beam, IP65 splash-rated
- Waterproof mats; optional cover; wheels or feet
- Best for: first indoor garden, seed starting, herbs, microgreens, low-light houseplants that need a boost
Same small footprint as the slim Spider Farmer, with a strong beginner brief: splash-proof bars, mats, and a cover for chilly nights. A gentle step up from jam-jar cress on the sill.
Wider houseplant and harvest wall
Mars Hydro Indoor Vertical Garden, 4 Tier, 150W
- Size: about 95 × 35 × 150 cm
- Three lit shelves, each about 95 × 35 cm
- Six LED bars, 150W total, IP65
- Wheels; mats; optional cover
- Best for: herbs by the potful, salad leaves, compact chillies, strawberries in troughs, a living-room feature
Choose this when you want a piece of furniture that earns its keep, not only a herb strip. The wider shelves suit mixed pots side by side.
Microgreens and salad on rotation
Spider Farmer Microgreens & Salad Shelf, 4 Tier, 108W
- Size: about 70 × 35 × 150 cm
- Three lit shelves; six bars; 108W
- Lockable castors; mats; optional cover
- Best for: sunflower, radish, broccoli and pea microgreens; cut-and-come-again lettuce; a weekly sowing rota
At 70 cm wide you can keep trays at different stages: sow, grow, harvest. Handy beside a dining table or home-learning desk.
Full indoor vegetable garden
Mars Hydro Vertical Garden Pro, 6 Tier, 250W
- Size: about 110 × 40 × 180 cm
- Six tiers; five lit shelves (about 110 × 40 cm each)
- Ten × 25W bars; 250W total; IP65
- Wheels; five mats; optional cover
- Best for: families growing salad, herbs, strawberries, chillies and trays of seedlings in volume
This is the “indoor allotment” option. It needs a clear wall of space and a commitment to watering several shelves. It is not the first buy for a single pot of basil.
Shelf vs clip-on light: when a stand wins
A clip-on or a pair of bars is fine for one tray. A stand wins when you have:
- More than one shelf of plants
- Children sharing the growing
- Nowhere safe for trailing cables
- A wish to grow in a dark corner without stealing the sunniest sill
You can still add individual lights from Plant Lighting for odd plants elsewhere in the house.
How to run a lit stand day to day
- Assemble on a level floor; fit wheels or feet.
- Plug all lights into one timer. Start around 12 to 14 hours for herbs and houseplants; nearer 16 hours for seedlings with little daylight (see Dobbies’ hours guidance and our lighting guide).
- Set shelves so lights sit above the leaves with a clear gap; raise tiers as plants grow.
- Use the mats. Empty saucers. Do not leave pots standing in water.
- Watch for stretch (bring light closer or add hours) or bleaching (raise light or shorten hours).
Electricity worked example: a 54W stand for 12 hours at an example 25p/kWh is about 16p a day. Which? notes many grow lights cost less than 2p an hour. Check your tariff.
FAQ
Will a plant stand with lights look odd in a kitchen?
White full-spectrum bars look close to ordinary daylight. Slim black or steel frames read like a narrow baker’s rack. Purple lighting is what tends to look out of place; we do not recommend it for living spaces.
Can I grow tomatoes on these stands?
Compact chillies, strawberries and leafy crops suit the mid and large stands well. Full-size greenhouse tomatoes usually outgrow home shelves; use the stand for seedlings, then move plants on.
Do I need the zip cover?
No. Use it when you want extra warmth and humidity for germinating seeds. Leave it off for established herbs and houseplants that prefer airflow.
What if I only have room for something slim?
Choose the Spider Farmer slim herb stand or the Mars Hydro small 54W stand. Both are about 40 × 30 cm on the floor.
Are the lights replaceable / UK plugs?
These units run from a single UK plug as sold at The Indoor Garden Centre. Check the product page for what is in the box and warranty details.

Soft product pick
Not sure? Most UK kitchens do well starting with the Mars Hydro small 54W stand or the Spider Farmer slim herb stand. Step up to the microgreens shelf or the 150W vertical garden when you outgrow a single slim footprint.
